The Leaning Tower of Pisa (or simply the Tower of Pisa) is located in the ancient city of Pisa, Italy. The Tower is called after the city. The history of the Tower started in 1173 when the architecture Bonanno Pisano started its building. Construction of the Tower occurred in three stages over 200 years.
The Tower has become popular due to its unusual lean caused by the soft ground which could not properly support the structure’s weight. The Leaning Tower is considered to be the third famous building on the Square of Miracles after the Cathedral and the Baptistery. Built of white marble, the Tower of Pisa is famous for its beautiful architecture and original engineering project.
The bell-chamber was added to the Tower in 1372 by Tommaso di Andrea Pisano, who successfully combined the Gothic elements with the Romanesque style. There are seven bells, the largest one was installed in 1655.
