Unleash the power of learning with the UGEARS Educational 3D Puzzle Arithmetic Kit, a fascinating addition to the UGEARS STEM Lab collection. This kit introduces you to the wonders of mechanical computation through two remarkable models: the Mechanical Addiator and the Mechanical Multiplier. Immerse yourself in the world of numbers and mechanisms while exploring the workings of these ingenious devices.
Inside the kit, you will find a QR code that grants access to a study guide packed with insights into the mechanisms, their operation principles, key characteristics, formulas, and engaging assignments. But the magic doesn't stop there—dive into the realm of augmented reality to witness the Mechanical Addiator and Mechanical Multiplier come to life. Interact with these models using a special AR application developed by UGEARS.
The Mechanical Addiator is a compact arithmetic marvel that allows you to perform addition and subtraction by manipulating gear racks with the included stylus. With sliding racks featuring arrows and numbers from 0 to 9, you can effortlessly add and subtract numbers in a tactile, engaging way.
The Mechanical Multiplier, a flat hinge mechanism, is the tool you need to explore binary operations on numbers. By shifting the dual slider, you can multiply and square numbers ranging from 1 to 12, transforming the sometimes daunting multiplication table into an enjoyable learning experience.
Discover the fascinating history behind these devices—the UGEARS Mechanical Addiator is based on the design by Heinrich Kummer, a music teacher from St. Petersburg, who invented it in 1846. In its time, this simple yet ingenious mechanism was a popular mathematical tool. The UGEARS Mechanical Multiplier takes inspiration from "Consul the Educated Monkey," a children's toy created in 1915 by William Henry Robertson, an American high school math teacher. Robertson designed this toy to stimulate children's interest in the study of numbers, and now, it's part of UGEARS' outstanding STEM Lab collection.
These two models have practical applications—the Mechanical Addiator facilitates addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You input a number value using the stylus, then input a second number. The device displays the result based on the chosen mathematical operation (top row for addition and bottom row for subtraction).
The Mechanical Multiplier is a fun way to learn multiplication tables from 1 to 12 while gaining insight into the simple mechanics of hinge-lever systems. By adjusting the sliders to different numbers, you can observe the product of their multiplication displayed in the window above.
The Mechanical Addiator consists of a housing that houses four racks with printed values and cam slots. A stylus is used to input values, and results are displayed in four center windows. To initiate an addition/subtraction operation, set the racks so that all windows display "0." The top row of slots is used for adding the second number, while the bottom row is for subtraction.
The Mechanical Multiplier comprises two sliders moving along a number line from 1 to 12, and a lever system that transfers their movement to a "Results" window, displaying the product. For squaring a number, lock the right slider in the "X²" position.
